How does the SRS differ from previous endoscopic solutions for GERD?

The SRS solution for GERD is functionally identical to a standard laparoscopic surgical procedure (anterior fundoplication). It restores a normal gastro-esophageal flap valve. Consequently, the available clinical results to date compare favorably with the results of laparoscopic surgery.

Most of the previously marketed endoscopic solutions attempted to treat GERD by producing a controlled stricture at the GE junction. As could be expected from the clinical experience in patients who develop a stricture as a complication of GERD, the clinical results were mediocre.

Can patients with hiatal hernia be treated with the SRS device?

Patients with hiatal hernias larger than 3cm are excluded from participating in the trials.

Patients with smaller hernias can undergo the procedure. During the procedure, the hernia is reduced into the abdominal cavity by using PEEP. The positive end expiratory pressure reduces the stomach from the chest into the abdomen, enabling safe stapling.

How long does it take to perform teh SRS procedure?

Restoring a normal gastroesophageal valve requires either two or three staplings (in each stapling a quintuplet of staples is used) depending on the specifc anatomy of the patient. The current median time per stapling is 17 minutes (6-44 range).  The entire procedure takes approximately 45 to 60 minutes.

Is the SRS available for sale?

At the present time, the SRS is still an experimental device, and is only available within the framework of a clinical trial in one of the study centers in Europe and the USA.  For a list of centers and contact persons, see www.clinicaltrials.gov.
